    Trip Itinerary

    Day 1

    PALANGKA RAYA – ORANGUTAN ISLAND - CRUISE STARTS

    We will meet you either on arrival at the airport or in your hotel lobby. At 7.30 am we transfer you 40 minutes to the tiny village of Sei Gohong where we board local canoes to observe orangutans on the beautiful forested island of Pulau Kaja. The island is managed by the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation or BOS and may be closed at times. Returning to Palangka Raya harbour, we board the Rahai’i Pangun to start the cruise downstream to Tanjung Pusaka village. In the evening, we will explore the village to see the fishing activities, village cattle raising, and a demonstration of Pencak Silat, a traditional martial art performance. Join the village school group as they practice and have a go yourself! After finishing this excursion, we return to the boat and stay overnight in the area.[L/D]

    Day 2

    TUMBANG NUSA - BADAK ISLAND

    In the early morning, we will use motorised canoes to visit the extensive blackwater Lake Bagantung. This is a unique peatland swamp ecosystem where we have the opportunity to spot birds and other wildlife. Then, the boat continues the cruise downstream to Tumbang Nusa village. On arrival, we will have a walking tour in the village to see some of their traditional livelihoods.  First the grey sedge or ‘purun’ weaving and handmade straw cooperative, made from rushes growing naturally in the canals and lakes. The boat will continue to cruise downstream, passing the large forested Selat and Badak Islands. It may be possible to spot orangutans here.

    Return to the boat for dinner and overnight in a quiet location. (B,L,D)

    Day 3

    PILANG - RATTAN WEAVING

    Early morning, the boat continues downstream to the village of Pilang where we take a short walk in the forest area near the village to see the process of rubber tapping (Mamantat) and rattan harvesting (Manetes). Our village guide will also point out some local medicinal plants growing in the forest. We then have a walking tour in the village to see some of their traditional livelihoods. Watch the local ladies at their rattan weaving process and meet the villagers. Over a special tea and coffee, with traditional Dayak cakes such as apam and untuk-untuk, we will be entertained with a Kacapi (two stringed instrument) performance. Escaping the heat of the midday sun, we will return to the boat for lunch. The boat will cruise downstream to find a quiet mooring place for overnight. [B/L/D]

    Day 4

    PILANG – TANJUNG PUTING

    After breakfast, the boat cruises to Pilang for check out. Leave the boat early for air-conditioned car transfer to Palangka Raya airport to pick up the flight to Pangkalan Bun. On arrival at Pangkalan Bun airport, a guide will pick you up and then transfer to Kumai by car (approximately 30 minutes). Upon arrival in the port of Kumai, check in to your cabin. The Wow Borneo boats are traditional klotoks, wooden river boats about 18 m x 3m. Rebuilt, each klotok includes 3 air conditioned and ensuite cabins below. Your cabin is fully equipped with sheets, towels and toiletries. The viewing deck above, furnished comfortably, is where we can view the rain forest as it glides by.

    The boat cruises downstream, and enters the Sekonyer River, bordered by nipah palm mangroves, habitat of proboscis and many other monkey species. Lunch is served on board.

    We stop first at Tanjung Harapan, a rehabilitation center for orangutans. After a short walk in the forest to the platforms, we witness feeding time at 15.00. Late afternoon, observe the proboscis monkey and other primates along the river. Overnight on the boat. [B/L/D]

    Day 5

    PESALAT – CAMP LEAKEY

    After breakfast, the klotok cruises up river for about 2 hours, spotting wildlife in the forested river sides. En route, we stop at Pesalat, where we will have the opportunity to trek in the forest to observe the wildlife and see the reforestation project. We can also plant a seedling there by donation, to help the project. Boarding the klotok again, we have lunch whilst proceeding along the side creek to access Camp Leakey.

    Here the older orangutans are reintroduced into the rain forest. On arrival, we take an easy forest walk to see the original research station and historical display and to see feeding time at 14.00 pm. Overnight on board.

    Day 6

    PONDOK TANGGUY – TANJUNG HARAPAN

    After breakfast, boat down the river to Pondok Tangguy which is a rehabilitation center for the ex-captive orangutans and see feeding time around 9 am.

    In the afternoon, visit Tanjung Harapan rehabilitation center to witness another feeding time around 3 pm. After that, we may visit a village near the national park. Boat down the river to the Nipah palm area where we can see the beautiful fireflies when the weather is good. Overnight on the boat. [B/L/D]

    Day 7

    TANJUNG PUTING – KUMAI – AIRPORT

    Boat returns to Kumai for transfer to the airport. Tour ends.
