    Trip Itinerary

    Day 1

    PALANGKA RAYA – PULAU KAJA - RAHAI’I PANGUN - TANJUNG PUSAKA

    We will meet you either on arrival at the airport or in your hotel lobby. At 7.30 am we transfer you 40 minutes to the tiny village of Sei Gohong where we board local canoes to observe orangutans on the beautiful forested island of Pulau Kaja. The island is managed by the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation or BOS and may be closed at times. Returning to Palangka Raya harbour, we board the Rahai’i Pangun to start the cruise downstream to Tanjung Pusaka village. In the evening, we will explore the village to see the fishing activities, village cattle raising, and a demonstration of Pencak Silat, a traditional martial art performance. Join the village school group as they practice and have a go yourself! After finishing this excursion, we return to the boat and stay overnight in the area. (L,D)

    Day 2

    TUMBANG NUSA – PURUN or GREY SEDGE WEAVING & VILLAGE VISIT

    In the early morning, we will use motorised canoes to visit the extensive blackwater Lake Bagantung. This is a unique peatland swamp ecosystem where we have the opportunity to spot birds and other wildlife. Then, the boat continues the cruise downstream to Tumbang Nusa village. On arrival, we will have a walking tour in the village to see some of their traditional livelihoods.  First the grey sedge or ‘purun’ weaving and handmade straw cooperative, made from rushes growing naturally in the canals and lakes. The boat will continue to cruise downstream, passing the large forested Selat and Badak Islands. It may be possible to spot orangutans here. The boat will stop and find a quiet place to tie up overnight. (B,L,D)

    Day 3

    PILANG - PALANGKA RAYA - PANGKALAN BUN- TANJUNG HARAPAN

    Early morning, the boat continues downstream to the village of Pilang where you are transferred to the Palangka Raya airport.

    Upon arrival at Pangkalan Bun Airport, you will be picked up by our local staff and transferred to the port of Kumai to board the Wow Borneo boat. Each boat is a renovated traditional Klotok, or wooden riverboat, measuring about 18m by 3m, with a comfortable upper deck where you can view the rain forest as it glides by. The boats have 3 air-conditioned ensuite cabins below deck. Your cabin is fully equipped with sheets, towels and toiletries. Delicious Asian fusion meals are eaten around the dining table on the deck. The boat crew includes the boatman, a cook, assistant cook, and English speaking guide. En route to the Tanjung Puting National Park, we stop first at Tanjung Harapan, a rehabilitation center for orangutans. After a short walk in the forest to the platforms, where we witness feeding time at 15.00. Later, in the peaceful late afternoon, we will slowly explore the quiet river to observe the proboscis monkeys and possibly fireflies in season among the nipa palms along the riverside. Optional night walk in the forest. Dinner and overnight on the boat. (B,L,D)

    Day 4

    PESALAT – CAMP LEAKEY

    After breakfast, the klotok cruises up river for about 2 hours, spotting wildlife in the forested river sides. En route, we stop at Pesalat, the reforestation site, where you can plant a tree, for a small donation. Boarding the klotok again, we have lunch whilst proceeding along the side creek to access Camp Leakey. Here the older orangutans are reintroduced into the rain forest. On arrival, we take an easy forest walk to see the original research station and historical display and to see feeding time at 14.00pm. Overnight on board. (B,L,D)

    Day 5

    TANJUNG PUTING – PANGKALAN BUN – AIRPORT

    Early morning, the boat cruises to Tanjung Tangguy, the rehabilitation center for the new ex-captive orangutans to see feeding time at 09.00am. After a short walk in the rainforest here, we return to the boat, which then cruises slowly downstream spotting wildlife as lunch is served. After lunch, we arrive in Kumai for transfer to Pangkalan Bun airport. ( B,L )
